17th Edition Requirements

The 17th edition, released in January 2008, is the latest edition of BS7671, and became effective for all installations designed after 1 July 2008. All practising electricians should abide by these regulations and hold an SJIB 17th edition card.

How It’s Done

All new cables are concealed under floors, in attic space or within the walls of the property where possible. These cables will physically leave the consumer unit and be terminated at every socket, light or point within that circuit. Each property is different , but usually this will involve lifting floorboards , accessing attics and basements and chasing into the original walls whether it be brick , plasterboard , lath and plaster , or other variety of material.

Chasing brickwork is a messy business!

Before commencing rewiring we will walk through the job with you. We go into detail about how many sockets you need and positioning etc. Rewiring allows you to have options, you can choose additional sockets, additional lighting, you can switch existing lights from different areas, or add some outside lighting, have a chat with us we are happy to help with any suggestions you have.

We always make our customers aware of what is extra and what is included in the basic package. Generally basic rewires will include a new consumer unit, wiring for up to ten circuits, all standard accessories such as sockets and switches plus earth bonding and smoke alarms. We can install extras such as extractor fans, shaver points, light fittings, flush spotlights, LED lighting , carbon monoxide alarms, bespoke accessories, garage installations, aerial points and networking cables amongst many others. Check out our gallery where you will find pictures of these options.

JRC PROPERTY SOLUTIONS has been involved in domestic rewiring for over ten years, rewiring literally thousands of properties in that time. We have developed a system that’s quick and efficient and prefer to have your job complete as quickly and smoothly as possible. Properties that are unoccupied are easier to work in and can usually be turned around within a day or two depending on size. Occupied properties can prove more of a challenge. We would always encourage customers to vacate, if possible overnight to minimise the time we take. We understand this is not suitable for everyone and will happily accommodate your needs, but will generally things take a little longer if you need to stay at home.

Within our quote we will indicate a timescale, we have not missed a deadline yet.

Included in your rewire is new, fresh sockets and switches throughout. We only use quality products as cheap accessories may cause problems later on. We have our preferred manufacturers, but will gladly supply alternatives should you wish. Standard rewires come complete with white accessories, we can also offer decorative switches and sockets at set rates and provide samples on request. We can provide dimmers, timers and sensors to switch your lighting for example, or if you wish you can supply your own decorative switches for us to install.

We offer a guarantee on everything we install.

Preparing for your rewire

The more preparation you can do the easier the job is!

Our information pack provides a guide on how best to prepare.

Unoccupied properties may need little or no preparation. We would ask that you make the house as clear as possible for our arrival. Occupied properties require a little more preparation. We can lift and relay your carpets, providing they are being kept. We will supply dust sheets throughout but dust can still get in awkward places! We can move around any heavy furniture on our arrival but would ask you do your best to tidy away small items such as ornaments and small appliances. Usually a verbal agreement on preparation is sufficient.

Any chases made will require plasterwork.

We can provide this service within our quote. It’s almost impossible to get the walls completely flawless after chasing unless you re-skim the entire wall, however we are confident our finish is of the highest quality and ready to paint.

Please note you will be required to decorate!

Testing and Certification

On completion of all work we are required to carry out testing and issue certification. Usually the certificates are issued on receipt of payment via email.

Beware of any electrician not prepared to issue paperwork!
